Making a Earthbound ROM hack is very exciting once you play the finished product, but youve gotta be very passionate and have loads of time to kill to get that far.Palette Swaps in Super Smash Bros. ![]() Editing tiles is a little easier after getting around the learning curve, and you can change things like the "drugstore" sign to just "drugs" easily. Map Editing: defenitely the hardest part of PK Hacking, editing the map takes up sooooooo much time! I am not good at editing the map at all, so in my first hack there was no map editing at all besides adding a giant fence after onnet so nobody could play farther than it was meant to be played, and my second hack was two giant maps (completely changed Twoson and Fourside). You can even edit huge sprites like dungeon man and replace him with say, Ness's sprite sheet to play as a behemoth of destruction! Then edit them with the indexed color palette of the game or else it won't work. Sprites: possibly the easiest things to edit, you can grab them out of the project folder CoilSnake spits out when you decompile a ROM. Knowledge of music trackers (what electronic musicians used if they were too poor to afford synthesizers) is required, so I'd pass on making custom music if I were you. Music: the only program which can correctly insert music to the earthbound ROM is EBMused. There is a programming language (ccscript) which is used for the creation of cutscenes, scripted battles, custom dialogue, etc. Most of the documentation intended as tutorials for Jhack will also work for CoilSnake. I have a little bit of experience (made 2 hacks all by myself for some friends)ĬoilSnake is ALOT easier to use than PK Hack (aka Jhack), as Jhack edits the ROM directly and therefore corrupts it often, erasing hours of work if you don't have many ROM backups.
